lot_16_grace-cross
Lot_16_Grace Cross

Grace Cross is a contemporary material painter and fiber artist whose vibrant, layered canvases explore themes of motherhood, domesticity, feminist history, and home. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, and raised across continents—including South Africa, Kenya, Greece, India, and the United States—her transglobal upbringing heavily shapes her practice, allowing her to weave diverse cultural storytelling, spirituality, and African cosmology into her art. She earned her BFA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art and her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Today, Cross lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa, creating deeply symbolic work that honors female lineage and unearths stories of motherhood, women's labor and erasure.

It was so wonderful that Grace accepted my invitation to come and paint shells with me. I have always admired her and we got to know each other a little bit through motherhood. I loved how Grace instantly reacted to a shell and said it reminded her of an artist palette, and so that is what she painted! She had to open every single colour and wash brushes everytime but the result is amazing! Voila! la palette!

Dimensions: 27 x 19cm
Every shell is wired by George Magaso, ready to hang directly on the wall from a nail.

@gracecross_studio
everardread.capetown.co.za
