Erin Chaplin was born in Durban and lives in Cape Town. A self-taught painter, she works across still life, portraiture and geometric abstraction, drawn to the relationship between the natural and the artificial and to the poignancy of youth as it fades. Her paintings hold a quiet vulnerability, and she has described feeling that she is “living between worlds. Reality, fantasy and my own reality.” She has shown solo at Everard Read in Cape Town (Path Through Mountain, 2020; Island, 2022; Red and Green Work, 2024), completed a residency in Sintra, Portugal in 2022, and exhibited in Melbourne and Berlin.

Erin and I enjoyed a crafternoon or two pre covid! (another lifetime ago!) and it was so special to spend time around brushes and colours together again 7-8 years later and catch up! Erin has just had a marvellous show of oil paintings in London with the Everard Read Gallery, and her shell is so iconic of her amazing and unique brushwork and palette.
