David Brits is a sculptor working in carbon fibre, and fibreglass, alongside installation, printmaking, drawing and film. A graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art (Painting, 2010), he describes his experimental practice as dedicated to public-scale sculpture, equally energised by material exploration and archival investigation. His work returns to inherited history, post-apartheid masculinity and South Africa's Border War, and he has completed public commissions for the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation and the Iziko South African National Gallery. Among his honours are the inaugural Rupert Foundation Social Impact Arts Prize and a residency at the St. Moritz Art Academy in Switzerland, and his work is held in collections including the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art in Geneva. He works from a studio in Woodstock. David is also a prolific Sign painter in Cape Town. A long distance sailor, Brits has crossed the Atlantic Ocean 3 times and raced alongside his father in both the Cape to St Helena (2018) and Cape to Rio (2022) yaght races, with their crew finishing third and fourth respectively.

We loooove how his beautiful sketches from his notebooks have translated onto shells, especially the fisherman on his boat.

Dimensions: 28 x 20cm
Every shell is wired by George Magaso, ready to hang directly on the wall from a nail.
