Philippine Laureau is a French artist living in South Africa, working in mixed media with oil paint, wool and, most distinctively, coffee bags as her canvas. The roughness of the bags and her organic, minimalist, intuitive compositions bring imperfection, texture and colour into her work, and as she puts it, “Sometimes, it gets loud. Then I start again… This is how I found beauty in imperfection.” Her recent work includes the Brut series (2026) and the Extension series (2022).

Philipine has recently exhibited her works at the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris where she received the esteemed Prix Special du Jury! I was lucky to sit next to Philippine at a dinner party, and invited her to paint with me, and now we have so much in common! both Parisienne girls living in Cape Town! both painters and moms! Philippine painted an earthy shell in warm amber, ochre tones featuring a sweeping band of rich burnt Sienna across the centre of the shell. Merci beaucoup Philippine!

Dimensions: 20 x 19cm
Every shell is wired by George Magaso, ready to hang directly on the wall from a nail.
